JV Basketball Scores a Win!

On Monday, November 18, The Camden Military Academy Spartans JV Basketball team had their season opener at home against The King’s Academy out of Florence, SC. The Spartans returned only one starter from last year and had only three weeks to prepare for their first game. The first half started off slow for CMA with the team missing a combined 17 layups and 14 turnovers. At halftime, the Spartans held a narrow 14-11 lead. However, the second half was a different story as the Spartan offense began to steamroll over the TKA Lions. The full court pressure defense was too much for Kings as CMA went on a 26-4 run that would prove to be too much for the Lions to overcome. The final score was 43-27 as CMA earned their first win of the season. Elijah Brisson led the way for the Spartans with 20 points. The Spartans next game is at Heathwood Hall on Friday, November 22 at 6pm.

Scoring: Brisson-20, Joffe-8, Suarez-6, Smith-5, May-4

College Preparatory School

What is a College Preparatory School and Why Choose One?

As students and families plan for the future, the question of academic pathways becomes more pressing, and for many, college is a natural goal. In response to this, college preparatory schools offer an environment uniquely structured to prepare students for higher education. But what exactly is a college preparatory school, and how does it differ from traditional public or private schools? Let’s explore the fundamentals of college preparatory education, understand its advantages, and see why such an environment might be the best fit for those with collegiate aspirations.

Defining College Preparatory Schools

A college preparatory (or “prep”) school is an educational institution, typically for students from grades 9-12, designed to equip them with the academic skills and personal growth needed for success in college and beyond. Unlike many traditional high schools, college preparatory schools focus intensively on building a solid foundation in core subjects like mathematics, science, literature, history, and language. However, what truly sets these schools apart is the environment they cultivate, emphasizing discipline, self-management, and academic rigor.

Camden Military Academy, for example, adopts a structured approach, combining robust academics with character development, leadership training, and a focus on discipline. This combination helps students not only prepare for college entrance exams and applications but also develop the skills to thrive once they are there.

Key Benefits of College Preparatory Schools

  1. Rigorous Academic Curriculum Prep schools hold their students to high academic standards, typically offering honors, Advanced Placement (AP), and other advanced courses that mirror college-level work. This exposure helps students develop critical thinking and analytical skills that are vital in college. Camden Military Academy, for instance, provides a challenging curriculum designed to push students beyond rote learning and help them grasp complex concepts that will serve them well in higher education.
  2. Focus on College Admissions and Guidance Navigating the college admissions process can be challenging. Most college preparatory schools provide specialized guidance counselors who work closely with students to help them understand the requirements and strategies for college applications, financial aid, and scholarships. They often offer resources for SAT/ACT preparation and provide opportunities for college fairs, campus visits, and other college-related events. At Camden Military Academy, students benefit from personalized guidance that ensures they can find the college that aligns with their academic and career goals.
  3. Character and Leadership Development College preparatory schools aim to develop the whole person. At Camden Military Academy, this mission includes a structured military environment that instills discipline, self-reliance, and accountability—qualities that prepare students for the independence and challenges of college life. Leadership programs and extracurricular activities are integrated into the school day, giving students the chance to take on responsibilities, manage time, and learn the value of teamwork.
  4. Smaller Class Sizes and Individualized Attention Smaller class sizes allow for more one-on-one time between teachers and students, ensuring that each student receives the attention they need to thrive. Teachers in prep schools, including those at Camden Military Academy, often hold advanced degrees and have extensive teaching experience. They are committed to fostering a supportive environment where students feel motivated and empowered to ask questions, participate actively, and engage deeply with the curriculum.
  5. Holistic Development Through Extracurricular Activities College preparatory schools recognize that education extends beyond the classroom. Many offer a range of extracurricular activities, including sports, arts, clubs, and special interest groups. These opportunities allow students to explore new interests, build friendships, and develop well-rounded resumes for college applications. Camden Military Academy offers a robust athletics program, ROTC opportunities, and various clubs that contribute to each student’s personal and social growth.

Why a College Preparatory School is an Ideal Choice for College-Bound Students

For students dedicated to achieving success in college, the benefits of a college preparatory school are clear. The rigorous academic curriculum, dedicated guidance, and focus on holistic development ensure that students graduate with the tools needed to navigate the challenges of college life. Moreover, the supportive environment at Camden Military Academy—coupled with its emphasis on discipline and character—makes it an exceptional choice for those looking to gain a competitive edge.

Goal Setting

Empowering Success: The Importance of Goal Setting for Camden Military Academy Cadets

Goal setting is a fundamental skill that empowers students to take charge of their academic journey and personal development. At Camden Military Academy, we recognize the profound impact that structured goal setting can have on our cadets, fostering discipline, motivation, and a clear sense of direction. Camden not only teaches cadets the importance of setting goals but also nurtures their ability to create, pursue, and refine them as they grow. By exploring why goal setting is essential, effective strategies, and how Camden integrates these practices, we aim to develop cadets into disciplined, goal-oriented leaders.

The Significance of Goal Setting in Student Development

By incorporating structured goal-setting exercises within both academic and extracurricular activities, Camden helps cadets see how their efforts directly impact their growth and achievements. This instills a deeper understanding that success is not merely a result of natural ability but is also a byproduct of carefully planned, sustained effort.

Benefits of Goal Setting

  1. Enhanced Motivation: Setting goals ignites a sense of purpose in Camden cadets, encouraging them to strive toward their personal and academic aspirations. By working alongside mentors, students learn how to set goals that genuinely inspire them. This intrinsic motivation, nurtured through mentorship and peer support, is crucial for developing the endurance needed to pursue both short- and long-term goals.
  2. Improved Academic Performance: At Camden Military Academy, cadets with well-defined academic goals perform better in the classroom and beyond. Educators and mentors guide cadets in aligning their academic goals with their interests, helping them create realistic study schedules and effective learning plans. As students progress, they gain a sense of control and fulfillment in achieving academic milestones, which reinforces positive habits and improves outcomes.
  3. Development of Self-Regulation Skills: Camden’s structured environment naturally fosters self-discipline, time management, and organizational skills—traits that are essential in goal setting. Through daily routines and scheduled activities, cadets practice self-regulation and learn to prioritize tasks, manage their time wisely, and assess their progress. Faculty members model and teach self-regulation, encouraging cadets to take ownership of their goals and become independent learners who are well-prepared for future responsibilities.
  4. Increased Self-Confidence: Camden cadets are encouraged to set goals that challenge them to grow while staying within their reach. When cadets achieve these goals, it boosts their self-esteem and reinforces their belief in their capabilities. By regularly meeting with mentors to review and celebrate progress, cadets learn to trust in their abilities and build resilience, a quality essential for overcoming future challenges with confidence.
  5. Preparation for Future Success: Goal setting is not limited to academics at Camden; it’s part of the institution’s holistic approach to personal development. Learning how to set, work toward, and accomplish goals is a transferable skill that cadets can apply in various areas of life. Whether they pursue higher education, enter the workforce, or engage in community leadership, Camden cadets are equipped with the mindset and skills necessary for future success.

Effective Goal Setting Strategies

Camden Military Academy adopts a hands-on approach to teaching effective goal-setting techniques. One widely adopted method is the SMART criteria, which ensures that goals are:

  • Specific: Camden mentors work with cadets to set clearly defined objectives, whether for academics, fitness, or personal growth. This process leaves no room for ambiguity and allows cadets to focus on actionable steps.
  • Measurable: With guidance from faculty, cadets learn to establish quantifiable indicators to track their progress, such as test scores or fitness achievements. By making goals measurable, students can celebrate incremental wins, reinforcing motivation.
  • Achievable: Camden’s mentors encourage cadets to set ambitious yet reachable goals, guiding them to balance their goals with available resources and personal constraints. This ensures they’re both challenged and set up for success.
  • Relevant: Mentors help cadets align their goals with their broader personal and academic objectives. This alignment fosters a sense of personal investment, making it easier for cadets to stay committed to their objectives.
  • Time-bound: Camden cadets set deadlines for their goals, creating urgency and reinforcing discipline. With a clear timeline, they maintain focus and stay motivated to reach their targets on schedule.

By teaching cadets how to apply the SMART framework, Camden empowers them with an actionable plan to reach their goals and provides a reliable tool they can carry forward in any field.

Goal Setting at Camden Military Academy

Camden Military Academy incorporates goal-setting practices into every aspect of the cadet experience to nurture well-rounded, disciplined individuals. The academy’s holistic approach includes:

  • Personal Development Plans: Each cadet collaborates with mentors to establish personalized goals in various domains, including academic, physical, and leadership areas. These development plans are revisited throughout the academic year, ensuring that students’ goals evolve with their growing aspirations.
  • Regular Reflection Sessions: Camden cadets engage in regular reflection sessions to assess their progress and realign their goals as needed. This reflective practice is an essential part of the goal-setting journey, encouraging cadets to embrace a growth mindset, learn from their experiences, and appreciate the significance of resilience and adaptability.
  • Leadership Training: Leadership training at Camden Military Academy is rooted in goal setting, as cadets are encouraged to set leadership objectives within structured programs. Through decision-making exercises and team-building activities, cadets work toward becoming responsible and empathetic leaders who can inspire others toward collective goals.
  • Academic Advising: Educators at Camden Military Academy work closely with cadets to develop and monitor academic goals. Advisors provide a roadmap for academic success that aligns with each cadet’s career and personal ambitions, supporting them with personalized study plans, time management strategies, and consistent guidance.

Conclusion

At Camden Military Academy, goal setting is more than a technique; it’s a core element of our philosophy that prepares cadets for success beyond the academy’s gates. By nurturing the ability to set meaningful goals, Camden equips students with the tools they need to navigate their educational journey with purpose and clarity. Whether in academics, personal development, or future aspirations, Camden cadets are empowered to become disciplined, motivated, and successful leaders of tomorrow. By embracing structured goal setting, they gain confidence and resilience, enabling them to pursue their dreams, overcome obstacles, and make meaningful contributions to society.

Middle School FCA Retreat

This weekend we took middle school students to attend the FCA Jr. High Retreat in Garden City, South Carolina. This year, the the message focused on moving from being spiritually empty to overflowing with the Spirit of God. The speaker, Pastor Holden of New Spring Church, talked to the students about what life is like being filled with God’s presence as opposed to be filled with the things of the world. Using water, he talked about how natural water satisfies our thirst for a moment but we continue to get thirsty but when we are filled with God’s spiritual water, the Living Water, He keeps us satisfied when we continually stay connected to Him. Our students embraced the message and related to it. The students had a great time participating in the games as well as the small group discussions. We received excellent feedback about our students stating that they were very engaging and respectful!

CAP goes Indoor Skydiving!

This weekend our Civil Air Patrol group got to go indoor skydiving at the iFly Center. I was pretty nervous and scared at the beginning because I have never been skydiving before, it was definitely nerve racking. When we first arrived the workers took our weight and our height measurements, they told us your weight and height is very crucial to be able to fly safely and have balanced air waves. The guide showed us all the science behind flying, and how different factors such as drag and gravity affected how we would fly in the tube. The guide gave us a flight suit and a short briefing on what we needed to do once we were in the flight tube. When it was my turn to fly in the tube the guide held on to me and helped balance my body so I wouldn’t fly into the glass. It was an amazing experience and I might even try real skydiving one day in the future!

A Day on the Town!

Camden Military Academy has students from across the United States and some international! This year a few of those international students are from China. Major Welfare Wang is a teacher and head soccer coach here at CMA and was once an international student here himself! Last week, he took our group of Chinese students on an outing that included a trip to Walmart to purchase snacks and other items and also lunch at our local Hibachi restaurant. “They are a long way from home, at CMA we try to make our cadets feel like home.” Major Wang does these trips monthly with these cadets. “For this year’s lunar New Year we plan to make hot pot and cadets can face time their parents on that day. We are excited about that hot pot.” – Major Welfare Wang. These are just some ways that our staff goes above and beyond to help our students acclimate and enjoy their time here at Camden.

Off Campus Church Trip!

Chaplain Hunter took 38 of our students to Narroway to see the play, “The Gospel According to Tennessee.” The majority of the students had not seen the play but a few wanted to see it a second time. Students enjoyed the play and got a chance to do the Tennessee Waltz during intermission. After the show, students were able to meet some of the cast members and get pictures with them. We even got a picture with the producer of the show, Mrs. Rebecca Clark. After the show, students went to Chick-fil-A in Lancaster, South Carolina to enjoy dinner! Many of the students expressed how much they enjoyed the trip. Off campus events like this allow students time to enjoy fellowship with each other and have a nice break from the day to day activities here on campus! A special thank you to our Chaplain for taking these students!

CMA Cadets attend the SCSPA Fall Conference

A select group of Camden Military Academy cadets attended the South Carolina Scholastic Press Association’s Fall conference at the University of South Carolina. These cadets are currently taking a marketing class at Camden Military and this gave them further insight into the world of digital marketing, creating, photography, and reporting! “Attending the South Carolina Scholastic Press Association was a great experience overall. It helped me learn a lot about how I can improve my skills in journalism and photography. The classes were very in-depth, and I enjoyed hearing the professors and USC students teach. The highlight of my experience was meeting and having lunch with my former company commander, Jeremiah Palmer who is now attending the University of South Carolina.” – CMA cadet Cason Pickett. Our cadets were able to explore the campus a bit and enjoy lunch at the Russell House of USC. Want to learn more? Read more SCSPA news!
